Educational Software products beginning with I

This is an excellent site for resources. They are easy to find and download quickly. The resources are constantly being updated, but inevitably some are out of date. As with all downloads of this nature, they need adapting for individual use. The children's section is informative and has links to many other good sites, all chosen by ICT teachers. The site is not an ICT site full of information for the specialist teacher and the name may well put off the non-ICT specialist; it shouldn't do as there is much here to offer all teachers.

The i Language Zone website is divided into nine themes and is aimed at children beginning to learn French as a second language, especially those at Key Stage 2. The site features exercises and activities, some of which allow the children to record their own voices and so pronounce the themed vocabulary. The vocabulary is excellent and would be a good motivational tool for even the most reluctant learner. The Teacher's Sector is comprehensive and includes printable resources to download from the website.

The site is a very rich source of material and information about aspects of life in the Roman Empire. In the main area, the depth and range of information is extensive, and the ‘Kids' section’ has a lot of useful material. Some specific areas of study, for example the Roman Army, are only really dealt with in the main section and this could prove problematic to pupils. There is a good range of Primary and Secondary source material. The site is reasonably easy to navigate.

This software encourages creativity and exploration; it has excellent coverage of shape and space and path of loci; and it allows children to create multimedia presentations. However, Imagine does much more than this: Logotron have stated that 'the ultimate goal of Imagine is to provide students, teachers and developers with a challenging general tool for learning'. I think that the program certainly lives up to this claim.

This is a child-friendly, simple-to-use, colourful, well-constructed program to make pictograms with Nursery and Key Stage 1 children. The simple graphs produced automatically resize to fit the page, resulting in a document that looks as if a professional created it. There is a built-in library of topic icons suitable for most scientific and mathematical projects, but if you need customised icons, an online editor is available on the website. The program is supported by a series of instructional videos.

This site supports work on the human body and contains images and animations with supporting text. The images are not of great quality for printing, although they are fine for onscreen use and only some can be copied. All text can be copied. The information on the website was fine, but the presentation and language was off-putting for pupils. It did not really stretch brighter pupils, but confused others. It is far better used as a teacher demonstration than for pupils researching information and diagrams.

The series is an ideal resource for Key Stage 1 and the lower end of Key Stage 2. It is presented in a way that will really appeal to children. The eight CD-ROMs cover a large number of activities supporting the Literacy Curriculum. The teachers' resources are thorough – a good explanation of the software is given along with suggestions and blackline masters supporting each activity on the software. The series also introduces pupils to traditional stories. There is optional spoken text.

High-quality content is delivered in an authoritative but friendly manner which helps put the student at ease. The 170 lessons are supplemented by audio files, animated fretboards and full motion video. Music tempo can be altered and either standard notation or tablature can be used. Users can record performances and save them on disk. This is an impressive title which has been well put together.

There is great potential for speaking and listening, cross-curricular work linked to research at many different levels. It links to most areas of the curriculum and allows both teachers and children the opportunity to explore different situations both real and imaginary. It is a great tool for producing plays, books and perhaps short instructions for students and parents with English as a second language.

Izzy’s Island is a desirable program that is easy for teachers and pupils to use. Its objectives have close links with the Early Learning Goals for introducing ICT in Reception or Key Stage 1. This enjoyable program consists of ten games with three levels supporting Literacy and Numeracy skills. A bank of resource sheets can be printed out. The program content is of a high quality and it is attractive to young pupils.
