English Online is a playful, thought-provoking, flexible website that could be a valuable addition to a department’s Scheme of Work. It provides a range of information, links and activities in an accessible and entertaining way. The website does not cover everything you might want it to, but it is constantly being revised and updated and the makers welcome comments from users. It has an encouraging focus on language at Key Stage 3 and the activities are stimulating for students and teachers alike. The website is attractive and easy to use, whether for a ten-minute starter activity or for following a detailed Scheme of Work. I really enjoyed fishing around in it – your classes might too, and you can sign up for a week’s free trial on the site. Read KS3 evaluation... |

The website was used with an advanced Year 9 group who were preparing for their SATs exams and studying Macbeth. We had already covered the whole text and focused on four key scenes. The class was now putting together individual presentations on how the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had changed throughout the play. I had uploaded web-links and resources to the site and these were used, with the discussion boards, to encourage independent learning. The site provided easy access to resources. The major benefit of the site is that it enabled the teacher to structure the pupils’ experience of the Internet by providing web addresses linked to a given topic. The discussion boards provide a safe environment where the pupils can seek help from teachers or their peers and these, again, are topic-related and can even be password protected so only certain pupils can have access.
