KS1 Content Evaluation

My Reading Coach offers a fully comprehensive reading programme aimed at phonetic awareness, pronunciation, word building skills, grammar and reading comprehension. It supports reading skills in Key Stage 1 and 2 offering an individual programme for each child. An initial placement test assesses the child's word building and phonetic knowledge and from this, individual lessons are automatically set. The child will then be able to listen to taught instruction before completing a number of exercises to practice the instruction given. Motivational support is provided throughout. Children need to use headsets as the instruction given is auditory with children linking letter sounds to graphemes, blends and words including nonsense words. Children progress to more challenging blends, grammar and spelling rules and reading comprehension activities to secure a more developed understanding of text. There are occasional difficulties with the pronunciation of words especially nonsense words as the instructor is American. However these difficulties are minor and should not detract from the quality and the potential the software has to offer.

KS2 Classroom Evaluation

A really useful reading program that promotes self learning, at a rate suited to the individual child. The program is progressive and works at the individual child’s level using an initial assessment test to ascertain the starting point and further review tests to plot the next stages of their learning journey. Teacher intervention is minimal during the sessions, which should be run regularly - ideally every day, and focuses more on giving identified support through the reading of a variety of extremely useful analysis reports. Children are presented with video and sound (the use of headsets is imperative) so they can see and hear the sounds being produced and build on these lessons to reinforce word building to support reading and spelling. They then move to look at grammar and reading comprehension lessons.
