Description

Description

This website provides information and support when making a photo movie using digital stills pictures. The site is easy to navigate and there are comprehensive tutorials that lead you through each part of the process. These are easy to follow and shown on screen with links to software that must be downloaded to support the movie production clearly signposted. When downloading it is necessary to ensure that you have downloaded the Media Player 10 before the Photo Story 3 and then it is easy to open up the software and start composing! The information offers various suggestions regarding areas that may be useful to explore for topics to cover. These are suitable for different age groups and with support the title could be used across the whole Primary age range.

Supporting Documentation

The instructions throughout this title are clear and easy to follow. The site offers the facility to download each of the tutorials, a set of comprehensive teachers notes, hints on writing the script for a movie and links to downloads for Photo Story 3 Media Player and another tutorials from the Windows Photostory site. All of these enhance the title and offer support to the development of creativity.

Technical Support

The tutorials offer full details of how to use the title including downloads. The main BT Education site offers the facility to contact the publishers if necessary.

Curriculum Relevance

Purpose of the Program

The title can be used either within a subject or across the curriculum. The subject areas can be tailored to suit the individual teacher and class and through this can be as varied as much as you wish.

Curriculum Relevance

Although the publishers of this title do not make any claims I would suggest that this program would add value to many areas of the curriculum and enable the children to develop their creativity through using it.

Extent

Assignment Photo Movie does not suggest specific areas for use but working through the tutorials it is clear that it has a potential to be used in many areas. It uses digital stills images, including those from mobile phones. The work can be further enhanced through the use of information and graphics from other areas that can be imported into the program provided these have been stored in a digital format. The title would support many learning outcomes across the curriculum. It lends itself well to collaborative work and as such would be valuable in speaking and listening activities. In many other areas it could be used to produce a photo movie on a specific subject rather than completing an essay. This would still require research from the individual but would result in another approach to producing the finished assignment.

Analysis of Contents

Appropriateness

The title would work with a wide age range working with a variety of adult support. I would suggest that any children undertaking an activity using this title were first of all shown the relevant tutorials and worked through them with a teacher. If the pupils were shown how to import and add graphics, sound and speech they would be able to have an understanding of the process. For younger children it may only be necessary for them to view the finished article as shown in what is a photo movie. They would then be able to work with support through the production stages. From that point it would be for the individual teacher to decide on the level of support. Younger children would obviously require more adult input and would probably need hands on support throughout the process. The decision on the content of the movie would be the responsibility of the individual teacher. The title is suitable for use with this age range and the level of interaction required by the children to complete a task would be achieveable from this age range.

Quality

The title is well produced, clearly written and aimed at supporting the individuals or groups of individuals to produce a piece of work that they are proud of. The Internet links are clear and the tutorials are laid out so that each is a progressive part of the work.

Differentiation

Although there are not any claims to differentiation it would be possible to achieve this through input and output. Some children would require support in capturing images, importing and arranging them into a movie. This, together with the resultant movies would help to illustrate the level that each was working at and their level of understanding. The title could be used with a wide range of ages and abilities although as always in some situations the range of adult support available would need to be considered when approaching a task such as this.

Summary

Assignment Photo Movie is a title that offers the opportunity to produce work with a professional appearance using digital stills pictures from a variety of sources. It is possible to import other material to be displayed and to use music and record speech to enhance the finished product. The website offers clear tutorials to support a movie's production together with links to teacher's notes, writing script support and necessary downloads. This would be a very valuable addition to a teacher's repertoire as it can be used across the curriculum with a wide range of ages and abilities.
