The new Secondary Living worksheets, starters, problems and puzzles software is an excellent tool for teaching Maths. It comprehensively covers the Mathematics Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4, from levels three to eight. It covers, number, algebra, handling data, shape and space, and measure through self-marking worksheets which provide instant feedback for the pupils. The interactive starters are a great way of beginning the lesson, warming up and stretching the pupils. The learning can then be reinforced by the worksheets to cement their understanding. This software was used with a large group of high ability Year 8 pupils, who were being taught extension topics using the Key Stage 3 sample medium term plans. The typical lesson during this evaluation period (4 weeks) used a dedicated computer suite which allowed the students one to one access to networked computers. During the lesson planning I selected suitable worksheets and then saved them to the network's shared documents area. This allowed the pupils to easily load the worksheets into their workstation, save the files into their own documents area, and print the completed worksheets. Pupils really enjoyed using these, much preferring them to traditional paper based resources. I found that having instant feedback on the worksheets also cut down tremendously on the quantity of marking that I was required to complete. Using a computer also meant that the worksheets could be quickly saved to the students own documents area and also printed to provide evidence of their success. Topics were introduced mainly using starter activities contained in this software package; the corresponding worksheets were then introduced to the class using an interactive whiteboard. When the computer suite was not available, worksheets were printed and students completed these practice questions in the normal way. I would personally recommend this software to any High School Mathematics department, especially if they had regular access to computer facilities. Read KS3 evaluation... |
