KS2 (Years 3 - 6)

Citizenship & PSHE

KS2 Classroom Evaluation by Michelle Russell

Installation & Access

This website is part of the BT Education Programme and is simple and easy to navigate. Macromedia Flash Player 8 is used to view the video clips and this must be loaded onto the computers. Downloading the video clips took a long time and if the children started to view them prior to them fully downloading they took even longer to play properly. This was very frustrating - particularly when twenty-five children are waiting and would be best done prior to the lesson. The video and quiz started up within a new window.

Planning Classroom Use

What This Product Offers

Don't be Bullied contains an interactive quiz and includes video clips. The video clips show how Muddle deals with being pressurised into smoking cigarettes and demonstrates assertive behaviour. This means that the children actually get to see the way that they should behave, rather than relying on the teacher trying to demonstrate or describe.

Purpose of Using This Product

I used this website as part of my PSHE sessions. Ideally, I would have coincided this with our school's work during Anti-bullying Week. However, as this had passed, I used it to reinforce the work that we had previously completed. Our focus for the sessions was assertiveness and assertive behaviour.

Differentiation

It is not possible to have the text read, nor can the text size and colour be altered. All of the children were able to start the program independently.

Classroom Experience

Classroom Organisation

I used Don't be Bullied as part of my PSHE teaching. The main teaching session took place during circle time where we discussed how our behaviour can affect the way people treat us. This was a reinforcement of the work that we had previously done during our anti-bullying week. After this initial teaching session, the children used laptop computers to access the quiz. The children worked on the computers in mixed ability pairs and were asked to think particularly about the behaviour attributes that Muddle used to help her to avoid being pressurised into doing something which she did not want to do.Once they had completed the work, we produced posters highlighting the key aspects of assertive behaviour. Finally, we spent time on drama activities where we were able to practise using our new skills to deal with challenging situations.

Context of Use

I used this title to reinforce the work that we had done as a whole school during anti-bullying week, however in the future I plan to use this title during the actual week. We had previously discussed different behaviours and how assertiveness differs from aggressiveness - the video and quiz supported this work. I finished this unit by getting the pupils to take part in drama activities where they had to put their new skills to use when tackling challenging situations.

Ease of Use - Design & Navigation

The pupils were able to access the quiz without much adult support. Prior to the lesson I had saved the website link into the favourites menu in Internet Explorer so that the navigation was made simple and the pupils were able to access the program quickly. When questions are answered a graph is shown depicting both whether they got the answer right and the percentage number of pupils who gave answers to the other questions.

Monitoring & Assessment

The children worked independently on the quiz, and I was able to monitor how they were working through observation, but it is not possible to record their answers. However, in most cases I do not feel that this would be appropriate. Through using this resource I wanted the children to understand how assertive behaviour can be used successfully in challenging situations. Using this website meant that I was able to do this clearly and simply.

Summary

Ease of Use

Don't be Bullied is a website resource designed to be used by older Key Stage 2 children. The focus of the videos and clips is using assertive behaviour in challenging situations. It is a simple website to use, although the videos do take some time to download and this can be a little frustrating. They are however extremely useful and clearly demonstrate how to be assertive and supported the work which I had previously done.

Classroom Experience

I used Don't be Bullied to support my PSHE work. After using a circle time session to discuss different behaviours, we used the website to see how assertive behaviour can be used to support us in challenging situations. The children used the website on our classroom laptops, making notes on how Muddle's behaviour changed the way she was able to handle the incident. Finally, we practised our learning through role-play. This is a useful title that I will be using in future.
