KS2 (Years 3 - 6)

Citizenship & PSHE

KS2 Classroom Evaluation by Christian Duckworth

Installation & Access

Access via the BT Education site was easy and trouble free. The activity loaded up very quickly with no difficulties. The initial presentation to the class was via the whiteboard and then the pupils accessed the stories and quizzes themselves from the K-Zone within the BT Education site.

Planning Classroom Use

What This Product Offers

The comic book format and use of the Internet offers an alternative presentation for children.

Purpose of Using This Product

The title was used to support the PSHE/RE Curriculum concentrating on friendship and relationships.

Differentiation

There is no specific differentiation available, the text size and font cannot be changed and there is no facility to enable text to be read out. It was decided to pair children with a good reader supporting those who may have found the text difficult to read.

Classroom Experience

Classroom Organisation

The children were introduced to the online comic by showing them the introduction on the interactive whiteboard in the ICT suite. Pupils could then access the stories and quizzes for themselves on individual computers either in the ICT suite or in the classroom.

Context of Use

The website was used to support the teaching of RE and PSHE. The current unit of RE includes work about the topic of friendship.

Ease of Use - Design & Navigation

The opening page has a contents list of all seven chapters of the story, clear, simple navigation buttons offer the choice of moving back, on to the quiz or returning to the main menu. Each chapter is presented on a single page in comic book format.

Monitoring & Assessment

At the end of each chapter there is a short quiz, some questions assessing the children's understanding of the text, while others ask their opinions. The test begins by asking the average age of the class, however this does not alter the number or difficulty of the questions. It would be interesting to have teacher access to the answers given by the children in the opinion questions but this is not possible.

Feedback from Pupils and Other Staff

The pupils enjoyed both the story and the quizzes. They particularly liked the comic book format and the humour used. After the sessions, pupils discussed the website among themselves in the playground and one or two accessed it at home independently. The pupils said that it was fun to use and showed interest in and sympathy for Bo Solo. All the pupils who used the website were interested in returning to the stories and in exploring the site as a whole.

Summary

Ease of Use

Bo Solo's Friendship Quiz is an attractive and easy to use website which enabled the pupils to think and learn about how to make and maintain friendships. Access to the stories and navigation around the website proved to be clear and simple to follow. Pupils were able to use it with minimal adult intervention provided that they could read the text.

Classroom Experience

The website proved an interesting addition to the RE and PSHE Curriculum. It would also be applicable to individual work with children experiencing difficulties in making and maintaining friendships. Introducing the website on the interactive whiteboard was useful for children who needed support with the text on the site, where a spoken word facility may have been helpful.
