Derive 6 is an excellent tool for mathematics students and teachers at Key Stage 4 and above. It solves numeric and symbolic problems and plots results as 2D or 3D graphs. Derive 6 can be used to solve problems involving calculus, matrices and trigonometry.

Derive 6 was used with two sets of students (15 top set and 15 bottom set students). Both sets of students were given one lesson to get them used to the main features, toolbars and menus of the program. The top set examined some calculus involving limits, derivatives, intergrals and differential equations. The bottom set students examined a range of expressions and calculation on fractions. Both sets of students found it easy to carry out these tasks using Derive 6. In all cases, the students made faster and further progress when using this program than studying these topics in a normal Mathematics classroom. The students found it easier to comment on the steps they had made (their workings out) to solve a range of problems and on the rules they had applied. Derive 6 supports many aspects of Key Stage 4 Mathematics and is an excellent tool for use with Key Stage 5 and Advanced Study of Mathematics.
