This title was very popular amongst my class, but more for its qualities as an adventure 'game' than in any relation to Literacy skills. Some children had read the book, but most took their patchy awareness of the first three chapters from the excellent BBC series.

The title can be used to support the Literacy Curriculum. It is ideal for encouraging reluctant readers to read the book associated with the title. It poses plenty of challenging problems and can be used as a cross-curricular resource. Pupils are able to use the title without teacher intervention. However, they need to read the first three chapters of the book if they are to solve the problems. This is an ideal title for group work in the classroom.

I chose to use the title over a period of two weeks with my year 4 Literacy Set who were working on the objective of reading for information.

The title is ideal for Key Stage 2 pupils and supports the Literacy Curriculum. It is an excellent resource for classes using Stig of the Dump as a class reader. It also encourages reluctant readers to attempt the reading of the book. It also has a vast scope for cross-curricular work. Pupils were keen to use the title and to solve the problems set. This title really encourages group work.
