With the support of Pixel, the lovable but slightly dizzy computer bug, the video kids and 'Helly Telly', children are helped to develop their reading and comprehension of non-fiction texts. Each of the 14 'interactive episodes' provides children with short focussed tasks, designed to reinforce delivery of Year 1 and 2 text level objectives from the NLS. The games are simple for children to use independently. Any explanation or instruction is either spoken, or part of a video clip and if children require any instructions repeating, or words reading, they can click for assistance. Many Key Stage 1 children should be captivated and motivated by the stimulating combination of colour, sound and animation along with short focussed tasks. Read KS1 evaluation... |

This software offers child friendly support for non-fiction text types in a simple and stimulating way. The program sets out to support independent learning, which it does effectively for children at Key Stage 1. The attractive use of video footage instantly draws the child into the problems they are asked to solve. The user quickly identifies with the two children in the video and is motivated to find solutions to the problems set. The activities are simple and easy to execute. The format for instructions is the same for each game, which helps children who have learning difficulties. It is hard to find stimulating software that covers non-fiction at Key Stage 1. Pixel manages to do this and is a good, simple resource to promote learning within the Literacy Strategy. Read KS1 evaluation... |

I used this CD-ROM over a period of one month with a class of mixed ability Year 2 children. I used the software to support work on sequential language and instructions. The children worked with the software during Literacy Hour sessions. Each group used the software in pairs, while the remainder of the group worked on similar paper activities. Only Special Educational Needs children with allocated assistants, had help with navigating the CD-ROM. Most children were able to use the software successfully without any adult help.
